I copied the pool into this post before building the deck because I know whenever I build the deck, the cut and paste process is quite simple. The act of organizing the initial list of cards takes a fair bit of time, so I thought that I would take care of that while I had the time before work this morning. In doing so, having not even looked at the pool yet, I realized two things. First, I had no idea what to do with this pool. I had some thoughts, some crazy, crazy thoughts, and we’ll see what happened when we get to the deck list.

The second was that in organizing this list, the most basic thing I needed to know was the color of each card. Yes, this is still an issue for me for some cards. For example, I had to look up Riftwing Cloudskate from this pool. I had thought it was the colorless domain flyer, Skyreach Manta… Manta, Skate, whatever! Anyway, the thing that I realized is that I should know all of these cards by this weekend. So as I continued to sort, I tried to identify each card as I did so. For the most part it was things like “Paradise Mantle, that’s the one that makes any creature a Birds of Paradise.” I’m not trying to get into every specific detail of every card, but having at least a base understanding of what every card does is a good idea. For the most part this will help in draft because I will have a better understanding if which cards are in the set and what I should be looking for in a particular archetype. No matter the format, this is great knowledge to have while playing my matches this weekend. If I know all the cards in the set, even on a “general idea” basis, then I will be able to play around things better. I can’t play around Echoing Truth if I don’t know what that card is right?

Land
2 Terramorphic Expanse

Of course, the very first thing I looked at was the sheer amount of red that is in this pool. Then I saw the green, particularly the three Imperiosaurs and green/red creatures seemed like the best route to take this deck. Then I got to the multicolored cards, and two copies of Knight of the Reliquary is nothing to scoff at, however, what really caught my eye was the fact that I had Mind Funeral and Oona, Queen of the Fae. I looked back into my blue cards and there it was, Dampen Thought. Between that, two other Arcane spells, the Mind Funeral and the Queen, I thought that a good mill deck was actually an option, and here it is:

7 Island
8 Swamp
2 Terramorphic Expanse

17 lands

1 Mothdust Changeling
1 Blightspeaker
1 Rathi Trapper
1 Pestermite
1 Stinkweed Imp

1 Frogmite
1 Myr Enforcer
1 Myr Retriever
1 Runed Stalactite

The immediate thing that popped out to me first with this pool was the strength that I had in white, particularly with the Adarkar Valkyrie. The next thing was the large number of artifacts. Though my blue pool wasn’t my biggest, it was pretty strong, particularly with the interactions with white. Here is the deck I created:

7 Island
9 Plains

16 lands

1 Arcbound Worker
1 Court Homunculus
2 Amrou Scout
3 Arcbound Stinger
1 Myr Retriever
1 Narcomoeba
1 Avian Changeling
1 Flickerwisp
1 Frogmite
2 Sanctum Gargoyle
1 Mulldrifter
1 Reveillark
1 Adarkar Valkyrie
1 Errant Ephemeron
1 Myr Enforcer

19 creatures

2 Bonesplitter
1 Runed Stalactite
1 Echoing Truth
1 Bound in Silence

5 other spells

I did notice that there were three Empty the Warrens which really makes me want to look at a Storm deck, but in the end I just don’t think it is strong enough. The other eye-catcher is Progenitus, but I think that without Tooth and Nail or a massive amount of ramp (more than 2 Kodama’s Reach) it just isn’t something that is very possible.

So, what would you build?

A sea of tables spreads out across the cavernous room. A voice rings out above the din of conversation, “Check the list against the pool that you have been passed. Once you confirm that it is complete, you may begin deck building. If you have any issues, please call a judge.” I open up the folded list and start flipping through the stack of cards that accompany it. After a quick check to see if there is any money in the pool, I settle in and ask the big question… “What the heck do I build out of this?”
